Nunavut’s aging fleet of power plants
Upgrading Nunavut’s aging fleet of power plants will likely come at a much higher price than originally estimated, Peter Ma, the president and CEO of the Qulliq Energy Corp., told MLAs this week.
That includes the recent expansion of Iqaluit’s power plant, which has run more than 40 per cent over budget.
Almost 10 months into his job as head of the QEC, Ma faced a standing committee of the legislative assembly, Sept. 23, to explain the budget over-runs.
Chaired by George Hickes, MLA for Iqaluit-Tasiluk, the meeting represents the first time that MLAs have brought QEC officials before a legislative committee to account for their actions.
Ma took up the challenge of turning the troubled corporation around this past November, after the territorial government fired Ma’s successor, Peter Mackey.
