Whitehorse Forklift Parts - With a population of about 26,418, Whitehorse is the largest municipality in Yukon. It is situated on the Alaska Highway in the southern section of Yukon. It is likewise the capital city of the territory. By area, the city of Whitehorse is ranked as the 79th largest city within Canada. The Yukon River is bordered by Riverdale on one side and downtown Whitehorse on the other. The cities name is derived from the White Horse Rapids which used to be near Miles Canyon before the river was dammed. The rapids resembled the mane of a white horse. The city is surrounded by mountains on three sides: Grey Mountain to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn to the south. The construction of a hydroelectric dam in 1958 caused the White Horse Rapids to disappear under Schwatka Lake.
Gold was discovered in the Klondike in the year 1896 by Skookum Jim, Tagish Carlie and George Washington Carmack. Gold seekers began arriving via the Chilkoot Pass until people began arriving through steamship during 1897. Unfortunately, there were several times where boats were lost to the rapids. Five people also fell victim to the rapids.
Just west of Whitehorse City lies the Whitehorse Copper Belt, that extends for about 30 km. Prospectors discovered copper there in the first year of the gold rush. The first claim was declared by Jack McIntyre on July 6, 1898, with the second claim declared by Sam McGee on the 16th of July, the year 1899. Hence, two tram lines were built. One went from the east bank of the river to the White Horse Rapids. The other tram ran on the west bank of the river.
Whitehorse's economy is largely dependent on the industry of mining. A lot of these mining companies have their corporate head office within the downtown core of the city of Whitehorse. When the mining business goes into a slump the effects are seen in the city also. Unemployment increases and some residents relocate to places where jobs are more reliable.
